Bruce Hatcher, the outgoing chairman of Queensland Rugby League, has backed Reece Walsh to become the top player in the NRL, drawing comparisons to the legendary Wally Lewis. Hatcher’s opinion carries significant weight given his extensive experience, having overseen the QRL during one of the most prosperous eras in Queensland rugby league history.
Renowned as one of the sport’s top administrators, Hatcher’s involvement spans 55 years, during which he witnessed the birth of State of Origin in 1980, Wally Lewis’ dominant performances, and the Maroons’ unmatched eight-series winning streak from 2005 to 2013 under Mal Meninga.

However, his most eye-catching comments were about Walsh, drawing comparisons between the 22-year-old fullback and the revered Lewis, which has ignited excitement among Brisbane fans.
Hatcher pointed out that no player has impacted the game as Lewis did. While acknowledging that there will only ever be one ‘King,’ he noted that Walsh shares Lewis’ unique ability to prevent tries at one end of the field while executing game-changing plays at the other.
In an interview with The Courier Mail, Hatcher expressed confidence that Walsh could rise to become the NRL’s best player over the next decade, potentially leading the Broncos to their first premiership since 2006. “Absolutely… he’s an extraordinary talent,” Hatcher said. “A team relies on its core players, and if Reece plays one of his standout games, he can contribute at least 12 points single-handedly. His speed is phenomenal, making him a game-changer. But the Broncos must avoid relying solely on him to turn games around.”
Hatcher acknowledged Walsh’s youth and room for growth but emphasized the pressure he faces after securing a lucrative four-year contract extension worth over $4.4 million. Walsh has already demonstrated his dedication to the upcoming season, returning to training two weeks early to make amends for the Broncos’ disappointing 2024 season under new head coach Michael Maguire.
Maguire, known for his discipline and emphasis on hard work, began pre-season training with the Broncos this week under intense Brisbane heat. Walsh has embraced this new era, reflecting his commitment to success.
Reece Walsh ready for Maguire-led training era “I aim to be someone who works hard, brings success, and helps secure premierships for this great club. But first, I need to be a good person off the field, a caring dad, a positive role model, and fully committed to improving my game,” Walsh said. “I’ve spoken with Madge (Maguire), and hard work is a consistent theme in our conversations—I’m excited to get back into training with the team.”

Police allege Mam was unlicensed and failed an initial drug test following a crash that resulted in a four-year-old girl breaking her hip. While Mam faces potential fines and suspension, sources indicate his five-year, $4 million contract with the NRL and Broncos is not under threat.
“I feel for Ezra—he’s an amazing person,” Walsh said. “He’s going through a rough patch, and the whole club stands by him. We all know what kind of person Ezra is—caring and genuine. We need to support him and make sure he gets through this. He made a poor choice, but that doesn’t define him or his future. He’ll learn from this and come back stronger.”
